Vietnam Alliance For Tax Justice’s Training: “Raising awareness of Tobacco Harms Prevention in Vietnam”

In two days 07-08/07/2022, the Vietnam Alliance For Tax Justice’s Training course on “Raising Awareness on Tobacco Harm Prevention” in Vietnam took place successfully with the participation of member organizations including VESS, CEPEW, EPH, VATJ’s partners and guests.
The aim of the training course was to help the members deepen their understanding of the tobacco industry in Vietnam and globally. At the same time, the training also created a space for sharing and learning among Alliance members and partners.
After 08 sessions of presentations and in-depth discussions on the market structure of the tobacco industry, tax policy and communications, the Alliance members have gained a knowledge base and will conduct research and social media activities on tobacco tax in the near future.
Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Anh, Director of the Development and Policies Research Center (DEPOCEN) gives the most basic issues about the tobacco market, taxes and related smuggling from research conducted by DEPOCEN.
MSc. Bui Thu Ha, Representative of the Vietnam Steering Committee on Smoking and Health, shared the results of the survey “The Provincial Global Adult Tobacco Survey Vietnam (PGATS) 2020”. At the same time, she described the organizational structure, functions and tasks of the the Vietnam Steering Committee on Smoking and Health, as well as interventions to prevent and control tobacco harms funded by the Fund.
MSc. Dao The Son, an Economist on tobacco, presented the interventions and tactics of the tobacco industry to influence policy formulation and implementation; and updated the roadmap for adjusting excise tax, especially for tobacco.
Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh, Director of the Vietnam Center for Economic and Strategic Studies (VESS), shares the most fundamental knowledge on tax equity approaches in research and policy advocacy.
Mr. Nguyen Van Phung, Former Director of Large Corporate Tax Department, General Department of Taxation, commented on the institution and policy of tobacco tax in Vietnam from the perspective of a tax policy maker.
Ms. Phuong Nguyen, Co-Founder of the Ech Phu Ho (EPH), introduces successful social media campaigns to raise awareness about tobacco harm and its impact on the public.
